Bring a hardy, fast-growing perennial to your garden or homestead with these elderberry cuttings. These are fresh, unrooted cuttings taken from healthy plants and are ready to be rooted at home. Elderberries are well known for their resilience, attractive foliage, and clusters of deep purple berries later in the season.
Why Grow Elderberries?
-
Cold-hardy and adaptable – thrive in a wide range of climates and soil types
-
Beautiful landscape plant – produces white flower clusters in spring and rich dark berries in late summer
-
Wildlife friendly – flowers attract pollinators; berries are enjoyed by birds
-
Traditional culinary uses – commonly used in syrups, jams, teas, and baked goods when properly prepared
-
Perennial shrub – once established, plants can produce for many years with minimal maintenance
Note: Berries should always be cooked or properly prepared before consumption.
Rooting & Planting Instructions
Option 1 – Rooting in Water
-
Trim the bottom of the cutting at a slight angle just below a node (the small bump where leaves form).
-
Place the bottom 2–3 inches in a jar of clean water.
-
Keep in a bright area with indirect sunlight.
-
Change water every 2–3 days.
-
Roots typically begin forming in 2–6 weeks.
-
Transplant to soil once roots are 1–2 inches long.
Option 2 – Rooting Directly in Soil
-
Use a small pot with well-draining potting mix.
-
Dip the cut end in rooting hormone (optional but helpful).
-
Insert 2–3 inches of the cutting into moist soil.
-
Water lightly—soil should be damp, not soggy.
-
Place in bright, indirect light.
-
Roots typically begin forming in 2–6 week.
Transplanting Outdoors
-
Choose a spot with full sun to partial shade
-
Space plants 4–6 feet apart
-
Elderberries prefer moist, well-drained soil but tolerate many conditions
-
Water regularly during the first growing season
-
Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds
